Smart tips for people renting a rooftop tent in Iceland
When you’re traveling with a rooftop tent, the shifting winds, sudden rain, and midnight sun all play a role in your adventure. Think of your tent as your shield and your preparation as your sword: the better you gear up, the more comfortable (and epic) your nights will be.

Here are our best tips to keep you warm, dry, and ready to face whatever the Norse skies throw your way.
- A tent you can trust: Our Iceland-modified rooftop tents are built for this climate. Every tent we rent at Campervan Reykjavik uses a durable fiberglass hardshell and all-season waterproof canvas. Seams and zippers are taped and sealed to keep out sideways rain, while blackout coatings help you actually sleep under the midnight sun. Inside, you’ll find a high-density foam mattress with anti-condensation mesh, so you stay dry and comfortable even after a wet night.
- Stay warm: Iceland never gets ‘seriously warm,’ even in July. Nights in the Highlands often drop below 10°C (50°F), while shoulder seasons can hit 0°C (32°F) or lower. If your rental doesn’t include bedding, you can rent cold-rated sleeping bags from us (0°C/32°F) or additional blankets and pillows.
- Real-world comfort: Our rooftop tents are tested in Iceland’s wildest conditions. Customers regularly use them in every season. Bedding can stay inside the tent when packed down, and ventilation flaps make it easy to balance airflow with warmth.
Pro Tips
from the Road

Always park facing your Iceland rooftop rental into the wind to avoid shaking and protect the tent shell.

Crack a vent or window slightly, even in winter, to cut down condensation.

Use blackout covers or a sleep mask during summer’s endless daylight.

Layer wool blankets or a foam topper under your sleeping bag for extra insulation.

Air out bedding daily to prevent moisture build-up.
With the right setup from Campervan Reykjavik, sleeping in a rooftop tent in Iceland is not only possible.
It’s comfortable, warm, and one of the most unique ways to experience the country.
Worried that pitching your roof tent will be slow or complicated? In Iceland, where wind and rain can catch you off guard, speed and confidence matter. The good news is that our modern hardshell tents are designed to be quick, simple, and beginner-friendly. With one practice run at pickup, most folks can set up or pack down in just a few minutes.

Step-by-Step Setup (1-5 Minutes)
- Unlock the latches or shell.
- Remove straps or the protective cover.
- Pull out and extend the ladder to help lever the tent open.
- Open the shell: gas struts lift it automatically, or unfold both halves (softshells).
- Adjust the ladder until it rests firmly on the ground.
- Extend windows or awnings with support poles if you want extra ventilation.
- Zip windows, fluff bedding, and you are ready to climb in.
Quick Comparison
Closing takes about the same time. Just reverse the steps, flatten bedding, and double-check latches. With practice, setup is under 3 minutes even if you are traveling solo.
| Action | Notes |
|---|---|
| Setup | Bedding can stay inside |
| Takedown (dry) | Quick fold, no tools needed |
| Takedown (wet) | Allow drying time |

Bedding Storage Made Easy
Every Icelandic 4x4 rental roof tent includes a built-in foam mattress. Most allow sleeping bags and blankets to stay inside when folded. For best results, remove large pillows, flatten bedding, and keep it away from hinges. This makes closing smoother and avoids strain on zippers or latches.

Walk-Through at Pick-Up
At Campervan Reykjavik, you get a personal setup and pack-down demo when collecting your rental. Staff will walk you through every step and expect you to practice once before leaving. Take your time, ask questions, and try a full open-and-close cycle yourself. This way, you know exactly how the ladder, covers, and locks work before you head out.

Insurance and Damage Policy
- Covered by standard insurance: normal wear, small scratches, and minor fabric marks.
- Not covered unless you buy add-ons: major rips, broken struts or poles, mold from folding wet, wind damage if left open in storms, sand/ash blasting, or fiberglass shell cracks.
- Exclusions: negligence (forcing latches, improper folding, driving with the tent open).

Count on Campervan Reykjavik
You won’t be left guessing. Every renter gets a full hands-on tutorial, and once you’ve practiced once, setup is second nature. If in doubt, fold down early in strong winds and sleep in the car. Safety and comfort always come first.
Good to know
Consider extra coverage for, Sand & Ash, or Gravel with our Platinum Insurance Package for complete peace of mind.
One of the biggest questions customers have with rooftop tent rentals in Iceland is: where can I actually drive and where can I legally sleep overnight? Here’s the clear answer so you avoid fines, voided insurance, or getting stuck far from help.

F-Roads: Where and How You Can Drive
- Only true 4x4s allowed: All F-roads (mountain tracks) require a certified 4x4 with high clearance. AWD cars, low SUVs, or regular vehicles are prohibited. Insurance is void if you attempt it.
- Rescue costs are high: If you break down or get stuck in such remote areas, rescue fees often start at ISK 150,000 (1,100 USD) and are never covered by insurance.
- Open season only: F-roads usually open from mid-June to mid-September. Driving on closed roads voids insurance and carries penalties.
Examples of Classic F-Road Destinations

Landmannalaugar (F208/F225): multicolored rhyolite mountains and hot springs.

Askja (F88, F910): volcanic fields and the Víti crater lake.

Thórsmörk (F249/F261): Glacier valleys and waterfalls, with challenging river crossings.

Kerlingarfjöll (F35/F347): geothermal hiking area, accessible in summer.
Driving the F-Roads in Iceland
Where You Can (and Cannot) Sleep
- Wild camping is illegal: Campervans must stay in official campsites or on private land with written permission. Overnight parking on the side of the road, in farmland, or in nature reserves is forbidden.
- Official campsites: There are more than 200 legal campsites across Iceland, located near major routes and attractions. All vehicle stays must use them.
- Protected areas: Rangers actively patrol parks and sensitive regions. Illegal overnighting can result in fines or even towing.

Practical Tips
- Always check umferdin.is (road status) and vegagerdin.is before driving into the Highlands.
- Book campsites in advance during peak months.
- Highland campsites are open only from June to September. Around 40 lowland sites remain open year-round, including in Reykjavík, Akureyri, and along the Ring Road.
- Never plan F-road travel outside of summer. Not only is it illegal, but roads are also unmaintained and impassable in other seasons.
- If unsure, ask locals at the nearest village or tourist info center. They will give you a direct answer.

Locks, Latches & Ladder
- Shell locks: Every rooftop tent fastens shut with strong latches. While driving, the shell is fully secured. At night, you can latch the shell from the inside for added peace of mind.
- Ladder security: The telescoping ladder can be retracted and stored inside, preventing anyone from climbing up while you sleep.
- Inside storage: Bedding stays locked inside the closed shell, with no loose items left outside overnight.

Iceland’s Safety Record
- Low crime: Iceland consistently ranks as one of the safest countries in the world. Theft at campsites is extremely rare, though locking your car and tent is still good practice.
- No dangerous animals: Iceland has no bears, wolves, or snakes. The only animals you’ll see are sheep, horses, or curious birds. Sleeping elevated in a rooftop tent keeps you dry and separate from ground-level activity.
- Minimal bugs: Thanks to the climate, Iceland has virtually no mosquito problem.

Parking & Overnight Safety
- Campsites: Always overnight at official campsites. These areas are patrolled, well-lit, and offer secure facilities.
- Urban stops: If staying near a town, pick marked, well-lit parking spots instead of dark or isolated pull-outs.
- Remote travel: In the Highlands, stick to designated sites. Random overnighting is illegal and unsafe.
Quick Safety Checklist
| Safety Step | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Lock roof tent latches before sleep or leaving the car. | Prevents tampering and keeps bedding safe. |
| Retract and stow ladder at night. | Stops strangers or animals from accessing tent. |
| Use official campsites. | Legal, secure, and patrolled. |
| Keep valuables inside locked vehicle. | Though not common, it can avoid petty theft in busier campsites. |
| Ask campsite staff about safe parking spots. | Locals know the area best. |

Roadside Assistance: Always On

Note
In remote Highland areas, response may take longer, so always plan fuel and routes carefully.
Rooftop tent cars are the cheaper option. Rental rates are lower, and smaller 4x4s use far less fuel than big campers or motorhomes. Campsite fees are the same either way.
| Category | Rooftop Tent Car |
|---|---|
| Daily rental | Low ($150–250) |
| Fuel use | Low-Medium |
| Campsite fees | Same |
| Extra gear cost | Sleeping bags/blankets |
Comfort & Amenities

- Rooftop tent: Foam mattress, ventilation, great views. But cooking, dressing, and bathrooms are outside.
- Camper/motorhome: Stand-up space, built-in kitchen, heating, and sometimes your own bathroom. No setup required.
Pro tip
For colder months (Apr-May, Sept-Oct), campers are warmer and easier for cooking indoors during storms.
Flexibility & Mobility

Rooftop tent cars are small, agile, and 4x4-ready. Easier to drive in Reykjavík, park anywhere, and tackle gravel or mountain roads. Big campers can feel restricted, too large for some F-roads and trickier in towns or tight parking.
Weather Resistance

Rooftop tents handle Iceland’s rain and wind well, but storms over 20m/s (45mph) mean pack down and move to shelter. Campers are better in extreme weather with fixed insulation, heating, and no need to step outside at night.
Experience & Vibe

- Rooftop tent = adventure. Sleep elevated with mountain views, Northern Lights above you, and the fresh Icelandic outdoors.
- Camper = convenience. Park, shut the door, and relax in a heated cabin.
Storage & Gear

- Rooftop tent cars = car trunk + roof box. Pack soft bags and stay organized.
- Campers = cabinets, under-bed storage, gear compartments. More space, less shuffling.
