Planning a 4x4 Van Rental in Iceland? Start Here
If you rent a 4x4 camper in Iceland, chances are you want to explore the Highlands. You can, but only if you know the rules, what insurance really covers, and how to plan fuel and costs. This section gives you the real answers so you avoid fines, surprise expenses, or getting stranded.

F-Road and 4x4 Rules
F-roads are rough gravel mountain tracks that cross rivers and climb steep terrain. Only true 4x4 vehicles with enough clearance are legal. Standard cars, 2WDs, and low SUVs are not allowed. Driving them here voids your insurance and can result in heavy fines and costly rescue bills.
A ‘Highlands-ready’ vehicle means at least 18 cm (7 in) of ground clearance, four-wheel drive, and ideally all-terrain tires. Some routes need heavy-duty 4x4s. River crossings are common. They change in depth with rainfall and are never covered by insurance. Always check water levels before entering and turn back if you are unsure.

Driving Rules to Remember
- Wild camping is banned for all vehicles. You must use designated campsites or get written landowner permission. Fines for illegal camping are around 20,000 ISK (145 USD).
- Speed limits are 90 km/h (55 mph) on paved rural roads, 80 km/h (50 mph) on gravel, and 50 km/h (30 mph) in towns. Police monitor speeds closely, and fines are high.
- Off-road driving is strictly forbidden anywhere in Iceland.

Insurance Basics
Driving on rough, unpaved roads (and F-roads) comes with its challenges: flying stones, drifting sand, and ash carried by the legendary Icelandic wind. Your 4x4 van rental should be sturdy, but that doesn’t mean it can withstand every single thing thrown its way. That’s why having the right insurance for potential damages is a must.
Every rental from Campervan Reykjavik includes the Essential Package (CDW), but this is the minimum. We also have other insurance packages (Classic and Platinum) that provide further coverage.
The Classic protection includes these four coverages, but a deductible applies depending on the vehicle model. The Platinum plan offers the same coverages but with a zero deductible.
No insurance covers river crossings or off-road driving. Always review your coverage at pick-up.

Seasonal Access
- F-roads usually open mid-June and close mid-September. Always check Umferdin.is for live updates.
- Highland campsites follow the same season. Popular sites like Landmannalaugar or Thorsmörk require early booking in summer.
- In spring and autumn, many campsites close, so confirm availability in advance.

Fuel and Costs
Fuel use is higher in the Highlands. You do need power to tackle those winding roads.
- Compact 4WD campers: 7-10 L/100 km (23-34 mpg)
- Large 4x4 campers: up to 15 L/100 km (15-19 mpg)
One of the most typical F-Road routes is Landmannalaugar. The last gas station before entering this region is Highland Center Hrauneyjar, located on route 26 shortly before the road turns into mountain roads F26 and F208.
Current gas price is 316.80 ISK (USD 2,58) per liter, and diesel is 324.80 ISK (USD 2,64). Fill up before leaving paved areas. Stations are rare, sometimes only one per Highland route. Carry extra fuel if you plan long drives or multi-night trips.

Handy tips
- Cross rivers slowly and steadily. Never rush.
- Park with the tent or camper facing into the wind.
- Download maps and campsite info before you go. Mobile signal in the Highlands is patchy.
- Ask other travelers or rangers for the latest river and road conditions. If you don’t have experience crossing rivers, just don’t. Remember, insurance doesn't cover damages caused by water!
When you book a 4x4 camper in Iceland, comfort is one of the biggest concerns. Will you actually sleep well? Will you stay warm enough? And what about space for cooking or storing your luggage? Here is what you need to know before you arrive.

Sleeping Comfort
- Mattress setup: All our campers include a foam mattress or fold-out bed. Comfort levels vary, so if you have a sensitive back, bring or rent a 5 cm (2 in) memory foam topper. It adds support, insulation, and warmth on cold nights.
- Insulation: All-season models include insulation, but Icelandic nights can still drop to -5°C (23°F) outside peak summer. A cold-rated sleeping bag keeps you comfortable even in the Highlands. If bedding isn't included with your 4WD camper, you can rent a full set (sheets, pillow, comforter, sleeping bag) from us once you check out.
- Tip: Even in July, it pays to have an insulated bag or quilt. Iceland's weather can turn quickly.

Cooking Gear & Food Storage
- What’s included: Stoves, pans, pots, kettle, cutlery, cups, and plates are standard. Some models also include a compact cooler or fridge.
- Cooking in Iceland: Shelf-stable foods are your friend. Space is tight; remember, it is a van and not a 4x4 motorhome, so pack items that do not require refrigeration. Think rice, pastas, canned food, etc.
- Storage hacks: Soft bins, packing cubes, and collapsible containers help keep your gear organized.

Heating & Weather Protection
- Built-in heating - Mid-range and premium 4-wheel drive campers usually include a Webasto-type diesel or electric heater. These run independently from the engine and keep the interior warm all night.
- Extra comfort tips - A warm hat, wool socks, and thermal window covers go a long way toward keeping the chill out.

Space & Organization
- Luggage: Soft duffels pack best. Hard suitcases eat up valuable space.
- Gear management: Stackable bins or waterproof boxes keep cameras and electronics dry.
- Inside tips: Keep essentials grouped together for night setup. Store everything securely while driving to avoid loose gear moving around.
Iceland’s weather changes fast. It can be sunny one minute and freezing rain the next. With the right preparation, you can stay safe, warm, and comfortable year-round in your 4x4 camper in Iceland.
Summer vs Winter Prep
Summer (May-August)
Nearly 24 hours of daylight. Bring a sleep mask or blackout window covers. Even in July, nights often dip below 10°C (50°F), so bring or rent cold-rated bedding.
Winter (November-February)
Only 4-6 hours of daylight. Nights are subzero, blizzards are frequent, and rural roads close often. Choose a van rental with a diesel heater, dual battery, and studded tires. Stick to cleared main roads and never drive closed routes.

Wind and Extreme Weather Rules
- Facing the wind: Always park with the van’s front into the wind to prevent rocking and door damage.
- Guy lines and tents: Secure tents and awnings firmly. If winds reach 20 m/s (45 mph), pack down and find shelter.
- Cutoff rule: Orange or red weather alerts mean stop. Do not drive or camp exposed. Icelandic storms can destroy equipment and endanger vehicles.

Practical Hacks
- Drying wet gear: Use the van’s diesel heater vents, quick-dry clothing, and microfiber towels. Ventilate while drying to avoid condensation.
- Condensation control: Crack a window at night, wipe down windows in the morning, and use insulated covers.
- Power management: You can rent an inverter from us for charging, but unplug devices when not in use.

Real Survival Tips From the Road
- Check vedur.is (weather) and umferdin.is (road conditions) twice daily.
- Never set up camp in an unprotected location. Move to a sheltered campsite or town.
- Keep backup food and water. The weather can block routes for days, especially in the winter.
- Store emergency gear (snacks, hot drinks, headlamp, first aid kit) within reach.
- Download offline maps or GPS tracks before heading into the Highlands. Maps.me is a reliable source.

When to Switch to a Hotel
- If you are sick, injured, or exhausted.
- If fuel runs low.
- If roads are closed and supplies are running short.
- If storms make you miserable for more than a day.

One of the most common questions with 4x4 camper van rental in Iceland is, ‘Where do I shower and use the bathroom?’ The good news is that Iceland has excellent facilities across its 200+ legal campsites, so you can stay comfortable and clean throughout your trip.
Toilets & Showers

- Nearly every campsite offers flush toilets and hot showers.
- In popular areas, showers are included in the camping fee; remote sites may charge ISK 300-500 (USD 2.45) per shower.
- Larger or modern campsites often have private shower stalls. Smaller rural ones may use simple communal showers, but they are heated and kept clean.
- Many campsites also provide laundry rooms with washers and dryers (ISK 500-800 per cycle).
Swimming Pool Culture (AKA Iceland’s Backup Shower)

- Almost every town has a geothermal swimming pool where locals bathe daily. Entry is ISK 1,000-1,300 and includes unlimited hot showers.
- Showering naked before entering is mandatory and strictly enforced for hygiene.
- Pools are open year-round, even when campsites close, making them an excellent backup for winter travel.
24/7 Access
Bathrooms and showers are usually open around the clock during the season. At some sites, you may need an access code at night.
Legal Overnight Rules
- Overnight stays in 4x4 campervans are only allowed at designated campsites or with written landowner permission.
- Wild camping is forbidden in national parks, protected areas, and farmland. Breaking the rules can result in fines or being asked to move.
- Digital campsite maps are available at rental offices, tourist centers, and apps, so you always know your options. You can also Tjalda.is for a clear view of what campsites are available across Iceland.
Portable Toilets & Dump Stations
- Many 4WD camper rentals offer portable chemical toilets for emergencies or remote camping.
- Toilets must be emptied only at official dump stations and never in nature.
- There are loads of dump points at campsites, Olís/N1 gas stations, and larger towns. Staff can point you to the right place if unsure.

You can collect your Iceland 4x4 camper rental directly from our office at Keflavík International Airport or at our Reykjavík city office, depending on the vehicle model you choose.
Keflavík is Iceland’s main international gateway, so most travelers start their trip right after landing. If you’re arriving by flight, we provide a free shuttle service to and from our Keflavík office, so your adventure begins the moment you land.

24/7 Support & Emergencies
All our rentals come with a 24/7 roadside assistance number for flat tires, minor accidents, or if you get stuck. Service fees may apply. For emergencies, call Icelandic services directly: fire (110), police (112), ambulance (113).

Peak Season Availability
- High demand: Late June to early August is the busiest. 4x4s, automatics, and family-size campers sell out 4-6 months in advance.
- Best practice: Book by February or March for a July or August trip. Waiting until April risks higher prices or no vehicles at all.
- Campgrounds: Many also book out in summer, so align your rental with your campsite plans early.

Step-by-Step Booking Guide
- Browse our fleet and enter your dates.
- Choose pick-up and drop-off location (Keflavík Airport or Reykjavík).
- Select your vehicle by size, number of beds, manual/automatic, and whether it is 2WD or 4x4 Highlands-ready.
- Add extras: bedding, kitchen kits, Wi-Fi, GPS, camping gear, insurance upgrades.
- Enter driver and passenger details, plus flight number if using airport pick-up.
- Confirm your booking with a deposit. Balance is paid at pick-up.
- On the day: Inspect the vehicle, sign the rental contract, and get a walk-through of the camper features.
