Useful info for a successful RV trip in Iceland
A motorhome rental in Iceland only runs smoothly when you start with the right setup. You’ll need a license, insurance, campsites, and gear.
Miss one, and the journey gets messy fast.

Here’s what you need to know before you even grab the keys:
- License: A valid driver’s license from your home country in Roman letters is enough for most rentals. If not, you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP). Also, keep in mind that the driver's age for RV rentals in Iceland is usually between 23 and 25 years old, depending on the RV model.
- Insurance: Essential insurance (Collision Damage waiver) is included with our rentals. But Iceland will also throw gravel, ash, and sand at you. Add our Classic or Platinum coverage unless you enjoy surprise bills.
- Road rules: F-roads (highland mountain roads) are off-limits for motorhome rentals. Only 4x4s are allowed here. Stick to paved or well-marked gravel routes.
- Campsites: Wild camping is illegal in Iceland. With 200+ campsites around the country (40 open all year), you got plenty of authorized places to go to. Remember, booking ahead in summer saves you from “no vacancy” headaches.
We know that booking a motorhome in Iceland is a big decision, and there’s a lot to consider, including things you may not have thought of yet.
At Campervan Reykjavik, we’ve been helping travelers from around the world turn their ideas into once-in-a-lifetime adventures. We’re locals, roadtrippers ourselves, and we know exactly what it takes to explore Iceland safely and comfortably. Let us be your co-pilot in this saga of yours. Here are some of our best tips to make your RV rental experience in Iceland smooth and unforgettable.
Early birds save more

Booking your caravan months in advance means better prices and guaranteed availability, especially in summer.
One step at a time

Our simple online system walks you through choosing your motorhome, extras, and payment. No guesswork. Remember, check the terms and conditions, and make sure you add everything you need to cover your own trip needs.
Campsite fees

Life (and Iceland) happens. While motorhome rentals have a 15% cancellation fee, that doesn’t mean the game is over. You won’t lose your trip or your money, as you can reschedule your dates (subject to availability) and keep the adventure alive. Just contact us in advance so there’s enough leeway to adapt.

First-time renters often imagine a hotel-style bathroom in their motorhome. Reality check: you’ll find a compact wet room with a combined toilet and shower. Functional, yes. Spa-like, no. But with the right tips, it’s easy to use, easy to maintain, and makes life on the road much more comfortable than you might expect!

Water tank & toilet
- Toilet systems: Most RV rentals in Iceland use a cassette (chemical) toilet. You’ll need to empty the cassette every 1–3 days, depending on use. Some larger models have a water-flush system.
- Showers: Hot showers in the motorhome are available, but water tanks are limited. Expect a few quick rinses rather than long, steamy sessions. Pro tip: Use campground showers if you want unlimited hot water; in Iceland, your showers are sponsored by geothermal activity!
- Water tanks: Freshwater tanks need refilling every couple of days, and gray water tanks (sink + shower run-off) must be emptied at official dumping stations.
- Where to service: Iceland has plenty of dumping stations, many at gas stations or campsites. Check the official map to quickly find all marked motorhome lavatory disposal stations across Iceland.
By knowing what’s on board and where to refill or empty, you’ll avoid surprises. Think of it as part of the Viking road-ritual: keep the tanks balanced, and the journey flows.

Storage & vehicle maintenance
With a larger chariot also come bigger decisions. From figuring out what to pack to understanding the space available to keeping everything organized on the road, you head can get dizzy in no time.
Luckily, our motorhome rentals are designed with smart storage solutions and practical layouts that make life on the road easier than you’d think.
- Smart storage tips: Pack in soft bags, use overhead compartments, and keep essentials within arm’s reach. The rest? In the suitcase.
- Fight condensation: Condensation builds up overnight from cooking and even breathing. And as stopping breathing is simply not an option, let’s better opt for ventilating. Opening windows or roof vents for even just a few minutes in the morning allows the moist air to escape and fresh, drier air to enter, which is a key step in preventing these issues.
- Keeping your chariot tidy: Hooks, bags, and compartments are your best friends for keeping wet clothes separate and your living space neat. Always keep trash bags handy and dispose of them at dumping stations along the way; this keeps your RV rental fresh and free from unwanted odors.
With a bit of planning and a few clever tips, you’ll quickly feel right at home, with plenty of room for your essentials (and even a little extra comfort). Motorhomes are cozy, efficient, and ready for the Icelandic adventure ahead.
An RV rental in Iceland is only as good as the route you take. Too many people follow the same Ring Road loop and miss the real treasures: tucked-away hot springs, puffin cliffs, or glacier lagoons without a single tour bus in sight.

Road conditions
Always check Umferdin.is for real-time updates on closures, gravel roads, and safe routes for motorhomes.

Fuel stops
Plan fuel breaks in advance. Rural areas can have long stretches without stations.

Know your consumption
For reference, our largest motorhome (Magni Weinsberg 5) averages around 13 liters per 100 km. Here you have access to updated fuel prices in Iceland so you can budget before you hit the road.
Summer brings long daylight hours, while winter demands shorter routes and extra caution.
Spring and autumn can mean changing road access, so checking daily is essential.

Driving a Motorhome in Summer
Summer is the easiest and most popular time to drive a motorhome in Iceland. With nearly 24 hours of daylight, mild temperatures, and generally clear roads, it’s the perfect season for first-time RV travelers.
You’ll have the freedom to explore everything from the Ring Road to remote coastal towns without worrying about snow or ice. Remember that, regardless of the season, RV rentals cannot be taken to F-roads; you need a 4x4 rental for that. Likewise, keep in mind that summer is also peak travel season, so plan ahead for campsites and enjoy the long golden evenings that make road-tripping here unforgettable.
Driving a Motorhome in Winter
Winter driving in Iceland is a different kind of adventure. Expect shorter days, icy roads, and strong winds, which means extra caution and planning are essential. The good news? Motorhomes are well-equipped with heating systems and insulation, so you’ll stay warm and cozy after a day on the road.
It’s worth noting that because of Iceland’s winter roads and weather, only compact motorhome models are available during the colder months. Temperatures can drop low enough at night to freeze the pipes, so don’t be surprised if water stops flowing from the tap. The good news? It’s usually temporary, like most things in life. Once the sun comes up and the air warms a little, the water will start running again on its own. New day, new beginnings.
Always check road conditions before setting out with your RV rental in Iceland, stick to main routes like the South Coast or Golden Circle, and remember that the reward of renting a motorhome in Iceland is worth it: fewer crowds, magical snowy landscapes, and the Northern Lights dancing above RV.
